Since my official political commentary role in April and May this year I have been following news regarding government strategy – particularly in relation to proposed public spending cuts. A review panel set up by the Scottish Government details a number of different options, one of which includes axing 60,000 jobs! Scary times for employees as they embark on the lottery of ‘will I or won’t I be safe?’ and even for employees remaining in their jobs how do they handle an increasing workload? Every manager working within the public sector should familiarise themselves with the research on employee engagement and its relevance to productivity. That’s why managers working through this turbulent economic period need to exhibit an inspiring presence that captivates the engagement of their staff. Charisma is not a skill, it is an attribute that everyone possesses yet many people block their ability to shine by erecting invisible walls of protection around themselves. As the government tightens its belt, the public reaction breeds a fear that cloaks our personal presence. Yet it is this presence that has the potential power to transform the world around us. £42bn cutbacks in 16 years……what if this provides the catalyst for transformational ways of working?
Have a great weekend.
